Roof leaks can be caused by many factors and circumstances and the most difficult part is identifying the source of the leak! Make sure to hire someone who knows how to find the leaks. Leaks can be caused from:

• Storm damage from hail and high winds
• Damage from falling limbs and uprooted trees
• Damage made by animals like squirrels and tree rats
• Damage by people walking and working on your roof
• Old shingles that have worn out
• Shingles that are cracked and sun damaged

…the list goes on and on. However, 90% of roof leaks are caused by improper installation or by defective metal flashing, rarely does the actual roofing product itself fail.

Flashing is found near any roof penetration area such as chimneys, walls and vent pipes and valley areas where roof angles join together. During a roof repair, it is necessary to inspect any other roof damage or problem areas that could lead to additional problems and a bigger expense down the road. If leaks are not properly addressed and repaired, the structural integrity of your home may be weakened as the building frame continues to be exposed to the elements.

In addition, the poor installation of roof shingles, which are sometimes nailed incorrectly, may need to be addressed. If roof shingles are missing, these will need to also be replaced.

Clogged gutters could also be causing roofing issues allowing water to overflow the back of the gutter and leak along the walls and inside of the home. In addition, flue pipes inside of a chimney can cause water to leak if they are not properly aligned.
